Your questions, answered

  • Second Sentence is all about joy and confidence. There are no grades, no pressure, and no tests - just a safe, encouraging space where your child gets to explore writing on their own terms. Our small-group setting means every kid gets personal attention, and our activities are designed to feel more like play than class. We celebrate every story, every sentence, and every small win. It's the kind of place where kids leave feeling proud of themselves.

  • Second Sentence is led by Audrey and Selvi, the program's co-founders, who built the curriculum from the ground up alongside ELL specialists and elementary school teachers. Both have hands-on experience working with young children in learning environments and pour their hearts into everything Second Sentence does.

Every camper also gets support from our tutors, who are bilingual high school volunteers who are fluent in both English and Spanish and genuinely passionate about lifting up their community. With this team in place, no child gets lost in the crowd.

  • The camp is completely free! We will provide basic writing materials and snacks.

  • Just themselves and a positive attitude, and we'll take care of the rest! Snacks and water will be provided, but if your child has a favorite snack or water bottle they love, they're welcome to bring those along. All writing materials and supplies are provided, so there's nothing you need to purchase. Just show up ready to write, play, and have fun!

  • Your child's safety is our top priority. Audrey and Selvi will be present throughout the entire program, along with a dedicated chaperone who is trained as a California Mandated Reporter, and a representative from our venue. Families can drop off with confidence knowing their child is in caring, attentive hands the whole time.

  • We close out the summer with a celebration you won't want to miss! On the final day, campers get to share the stories they've worked so hard on in a special show-and-tell showcase - a proud moment for kids and families alike. We'll share a meal together with pizza and food, and we're thrilled to host a special guest: an influential Hispanic author who will speak to families about their journey and the power of storytelling. It's an evening of inspiration, community, and proof of just how far your child has come. More information about the culminating event will be released closer to the end of summer!
