Our Programs

At Second Sentence, we run a range of programs - from our summer writing camp and writers' workshops to a pen pal program and a school-based fundraising club - all rooted in the same mission of building confidence and joy in young writers.

  • Second Sentence Summer is our flagship free writing camp in Mar Vista for 3rd and 4th grade Spanish-speaking English Language Learners. Over the course of the program, campers build real writing skills through expert-led lessons, fun games, and a one-of-a-kind Storybook Project where every child creates and takes home their very own original book. Sessions begin in June 2026!

  • Our Pen Pal Program pairs students with a writing buddy for the entire 2026–27 school year, giving them a real, ongoing relationship to nurture through the art of letter writing. Open to all grade levels, it's a meaningful way to practice conversational and narrative writing while building a genuine connection - registration opens at the start of the school year.

  • Writers' Workshops are fun, focused after-school sessions tailored to different grade levels, each with their own unique theme and approach. Think of it like a mini camp day - kids get dedicated writing time, engaging activities, and even a built-in homework break, making it the perfect after-school creative reset.

  • Our Fundraising Club is open exclusively to Marlborough School students looking to make a real impact in their community. Members raise awareness about illiteracy in Spanish-speaking communities and fundraise directly for the Second Sentence summer program - turning their passion for equity into meaningful action.

Our Values

Bilingualism is a Superpower

We celebrate the linguistic strengths our campers already have. Speaking two languages is not a barrier - it’s a gift. All of our tutors are also bilingual themselves, and we choose to celebrate that strength instead of shaming it.

Confidence Over Perfection

We meet every child where they are. Our goal is never perfect grammar - it's a kid who believes in their own voice and isn't afraid to use it.

Community Over Competition

Second Sentence is a place where kids cheer each other on. Every story matters, every writer belongs, and no one gets left behind.

Writing Beyond the Classroom

Writing isn't just a school skill - it's how we make sense of the world, share who we are, and leave our mark. We help kids see their words as something meaningful, something that matters far beyond the page.
